DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: LSAV offers extensive opportunities for concerned individuals. Live in proximity and unity with the poor while working with the Little Sisters in certified home-health agencies, community and family centers, a single-parent temporary shelter, permanent housing cooperatives, and other community outreach programs. Prime requirement is a willingness to work with the poor while focusing on “self-help” as well as maintaining and enhancing family life.
TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Child care and youth workers, social workers, van
drivers, community health nurses, shelter staff, advocates and counselors,
teachers, English as a Second Language and GED tutors, computer data entry,
clerical, thrift-shop workers, organizers for food banks, and other willing
workers are needed year-round. Special summer youth programs seek recreational,
organizational, and creative workers. We fit the job to your talent, or we’ll
train you to fit the job.
GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS OF SERVICE: Live and work in stimulating urban
settings. Three (3) in Massachusetts; Two (2) in New York City; Two (2) in
Upstate New York; One (1) in Philadelphia.
LENGTH OF SERVICE: Four months to one year with option to renew. One (or more) year commitment preferred.
REQUIREMENTS: Male or female, single or married, age 20+; any race or creed are invited to apply, individuals willing to live in community with the Little Sisters and volunteers of diverse cultures, ages, experience and background are welcomed.
BENEFITS: Room and board. Weekly food allowance for all volunteers
plus $100.00 per month stipend. College loans deferred. Full medical insurance
and one week paid vacation for each full year of service. Each volunteer has a
house liaison and work supervisor and receives orientation and training. All
volunteers are required to attend a week of reflection and several weekend
gatherings throughout the year. Free time provided with direction on enjoying
the cultural and spiritual outlets of each region. Communities offer
hospitality by sharing their material, physical, and spiritual resources.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications are accepted all year. There is a rolling admission policy. The process should begin at least three months prior to the expected placement date. (Click to go to our application page).
INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS: International applications are welcomed, however international applicants must commit to one year of service and submit a $300.00 administration fee. The fee is due before their arrival in the United States.
AMERICORPS: The LSAV is a proud member of the Americorps Education Award Program (AEAP). Volunteers taking part in this program may earn $4725.00 for a one-year term of service toward outstanding debts or future education expenses, or $2362.00 foir a six month term of service.
